In the phone monitoring site Ars Technica change in the new Android documentation for Google A / B or seamless system updates from Google, which Google introduced in my phone Pixel and Pixel XL. The system is borrowed from the ChromeOS OS update engine.
This system makes it easy for users to keep using the device during the update and does not require the cache partition to store OTA update packages.
Android device makers can implement A / B on Android 7.1 and above. For example, Google notes that smooth updates have helped Pixel owners install monthly security updates faster.
The seamless updates use two sets of bootable partitions, referred to as aperture A and slot B, with one containing a set of active partitions and the other containing unused partitions for reference in case of an error. All update activities are performed on sections in the unused slot.
Although it offers a better update experience, but seamless updates still require user storage space to download update packages.
Google will add in Android 8.0 the feature of "Live Updates" streaming updates for a seamless update system, which will address scenarios lacking in hardware storage space.
"A / B updates have the Update Flow option to address this problem: The flow of A / B updates needs almost no buffering and only needs about 100 kilobytes of metadata."
